Patrick Wolf is too much
He’s like a goof-ball fopish Lady Gaga in the body of a prepubescent, bi-curious Brit. Still doesn’t mean I’m not fascinated. I assume his popularity is among the teenaged emo set, and that’s cool. His over-the-top style and Morrissey-esque confused sexuality (however in Wolf’s case I think it’s he’s overly sexed-out, whereas Morrissey has often claimed to be totally abstinent) do make him compelling, but I often wonder who is listening to this stuff? This music, replete with stringed orchestral backing and droning rhythms can’t be what the mascara wearing kids are listening to on the bus. Is it?
Who knows? I still love watching his videos. If you haven’t seen his video for “Hard Times” you’re seriously missing out. Is it the best music out there? Uh, no. Does the music video make me feel weird and dirty. A hundred times yes. But I just love knowing that there are artists out there making videos, with a concept, costumes, production quality and artistry. Even if it did come from the mind of a sexually confused Harry Potter.
